Oscar Piastri has become the fifth Australian to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix, taking the chequered flag for McLaren in Hungary.
Despite being in second place, McLaren teammate Lando Norris was given a preferential pit stop strategy under the condition that he would hand first place back to Piastri.
However, as Norris took the lead following the preferential treatment from his team, he started denying team orders to slow the pace and created a gap to Piastri.
When told he needed to allow Oscar through, Norris responded over the radio, 'Yeah, well tell him to catch up then please.
' Will Joseph, Norris's engineer, pleaded for him to slow down and let his Australian teammate pass with three laps to go, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in winning a championship.
Piastri had earned the team orders after getting past his teammate off the start and leading after the first turn.
He was brilliant for the opening half of the race, but a moment off-track on lap 34 gave Norris a chance at the win.
Despite the challenges, Piastri managed to secure his maiden win, describing it as 'very, very special' and a dream come true.
During the race, Red Bull champion Max Verstappen ran off the track at the opening turn and moved past Norris into second place.
Red Bull ordered Verstappen to give Norris second place as the stewards began investigating the Dutchman for gaining an advantage off-track.
As the race settled, Piastri maintained a three-second lead over Norris, with Verstappen further behind.
Lewis Hamilton, from fourth place, pitted at the end of lap 16 to try and perform an undercut on those ahead.
Norris responded a lap later, and then Piastri pitted from the lead at the end of lap 18.
Meanwhile, Red Bull kept Verstappen out to have fresher tyres at the end of the race.
Verstappen came in at the end of lap 21, rejoining behind Piastri, Norris, and Hamilton.
Out in front, Piastri looked assured as he pushed out an advantage over Norris and Hamilton.
Verstappen started his charge back to the podium positions, using his tyre advantage to close in on Hamilton.
However, on lap 34, Piastri went off track, halving his four-second lead over Norris.
Norris began to narrow the gap, with Piastri's lead down to 1.
6 seconds on lap 40 of 70.
Further back, Hamilton and Verstappen squabbled over third place as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc joined the fight.
Hamilton and Leclerc pitted at the end of lap 40, while Verstappen stayed out with the tyre advantage.
McLaren chose to pit Norris before Piastri for the second stop, bringing the Brit in at the end of lap 45.
Norris was asked by his team to allow Piastri ahead when the Australian caught up to him, but Piastri needed to catch him first.
Ultimately, Norris played the team game, and Piastri achieved his maiden win.
Meanwhile, Verstappen pitted on lap 49, giving him 21 laps to chase down Leclerc and Hamilton for a podium place.
Verstappen's hopes of a podium ended on lap 63 when he tried to overtake Hamilton but locked his wheels, causing both cars to come together.
Despite being in front, Verstappen was deemed the instigator of the crash and fell to fifth place as Leclerc claimed fourth.
