Leaving Longyearben behind on snowmobile, or a 'snow scooter' as the Norwegians call them, towing a sled of gear eight hours into a void of ice and snow, is a humbling experience and makes one feel very small. During the ride out to where our base camp was to be, nearly half of our crew suffered some degree of frostbite... my nose still has the scar.|

While visiting longyearbyan with a cruise ship, We independantly booked a dogsledding tour on wheels with svalbard husky. While we travelled with one baby and two little kids, we booked the easy tour with adogs pulling a wagon. It was a great experience. Our lovely half Swedisch guide, told us lots of things about Svalbard. She loves the island and so she 's happy to answer all of your questions. The dogs are great and love children. We will defenitly return and go sledding when there is snow!|
It seems close to something that I can’t understand, the last stop before a bridge that I can’t see to a place I can’t go. Sacred in its power, the North is poetic and violent, humbling and invigorating and full of many other adjectives that can only be felt in order to understand. Perhaps it is in the magnetism of the place, a magnetic charge on which all direction is based.|
After locating the collapsed tents we went to work digging them out... This is Kitt, Tash and Mats at around 5 AM fighting the wind and snow in a losing battle. We ended up having to abandon digging during the storm and eventually found them under 3 feet of wind drifts when the storm finally cleared.|

Booked a husky ride via the website and were not disappointed. Picked up from cruise ship and our only problem was getting into the land rover to get to the kennels in the advent valley. Robert had promised it would be accessible for a wheelchair but sadly it wasn't and Thomas our guide was a little bemused to see how we would manage. With a little help and a lot of heaving and pushing we managed to get in albeit not very elegantly. However, a ride to the kennels was well worth it and to be able to meet the huskies, learn how to harness them and the tour was brilliant. We even managed to see an arctic fox and some reindeer plus, barnacle geese. We were amazed at the strength of the huskies and with a team of 12 dogs and us sitting on reindeer skins we felt like intrepid explorers. Our ship had offered a similar tour for an hour and a half for £100 per person. Our 4 hour trip cost just over £80 per person and we did so much more. Thank you Svalbard Husky, but as a point for future bookings, please make clear that it is not very wheelchair friendly despite your assurances it would be, but f you are prepared to be bundled in and out and put a blind eye to Heath and safety it is worth every penny (krone)|
